Diablo III: Demon Hunter designed to be "really gnarly" contrast to Monk

Want to know why the newly-announced Diablo III Demon Hunter turned out the way she did? Blame the Monk.

The final Diablo III class, the Demon Hunter, was announced at Blizzcon last weekend, complete with an array of ranged attacks. Art director Christian Lichtner said the class's design is supposed to compliment that of the Monk, which features martial arts moves.

"We really wanted to create a class that contrasted the Monk," he said, speaking to Kotaku.

"We're looking at the lineup and we went 'Look, if you want to play a darker class, a little bit more mysterious, a little bit more on the scarier side, which one would you want to play?' There's the Witch Doctor, which is amazing, but we wanted to give you a little more choice with the Demon Hunter."

He added: "We knew from the get go that we wanted to do a ranged class. Through coincidence we kept having to put it off. We'd introduce a new class, get excited by that, and we'd have to put it off. But when we got to the fifth class, we knew it was going to be ranged."

Senior designer Jason Bender added: "She's pretty brutal; pretty angsty. We wanted to go double-dark with this character, to be really gnarly with it."

The Demon Hunter relies on grenades and missile weapons, as was shown in some incredible footage from the Californian event at the weekend. Check her out in action below.

Keep dreaming, though; there's still not date.
