Diablo 3 runs at 1080p on both PS4 and Xbox One

Diablo 3 will have the same resolution on Xbox One as PS4. Blizzard isn't giving ammunition to either army in the console war.

Diablo 3: Ultimate Evil Edition will launch on Xbox One supporting a resolution of 900p, but a day one patch will bring it up to 1080p, matching the PS4 version.

"Native 1080p resolution. You will need to download the day-one patch for the Xbox One to get that support, but it will be there. We're very happy about that," Blizzard associate producer Tiffany Wat told Gamespot.

Previously, Blizzard had said that although both versions will run at 60FPS, the Xbox One version of Diablo 3 would be restricted to 900p. The U-turn is good news for those of us who enjoy the occasional ceasefire in the fanboy mudslinging matches - and also for Xbox One fans, of course.

Although Blizzard didn't explain why the Xbox One version will need a patch to match the PS4 version, one solution presents itself: Microsoft released an new Xbox One SDK in June, unlocking extra processing power previously reserved for the Kinect.

If this enabled Blizzard to add an additional goal of hitting 1080p on Xbox One to its development schedule, it probably had to go to the back of the queue behind other key priorities, in order to meet targets and milestones.

It's kind of similar to how Bungie dropped Kinect support for Destiny to bring the Xbox One's resolution up to the PS4's - but couldn't get it done in time for the beta.

Diablo 3: Ultimate Evil Edition is due on August 19, and includes the Reaper of Souls expansion. It joins Mac, PC, PS3 and Xbox 360 versions of the RPG, which has shipped in excess of 20 million copies, and you can import your save files cross-platform.
