Deus Ex: Human Revolution's colour scheme explained

Asked why Deus Ex: Human Revolution so strongly favours just two colours, designer Antoine Thisdale said the colour helps communicate the story.

"The other colors are all jerks," the designer joked, speaking to Gamespy, before explaining:

"The main colors are black and gold. That's the choice for Renaissance stuff; those are the central colors for the theme. When you see those colors, they mean something in the game.

"But we'll also have supportive colors for that - cyan and red, which also have their meanings. More of a sci-fi, dramatic feel. You know these colors well, and it helps you navigate through the game. It tells you a little bit of the story as well.

"People have been saying, 'Why isn't it blue like the first Deus Ex was?' Well, ours is another color. It's actually meaningful if you get through it."

Human Revolution releases at the end of the month for PC, PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360.
