Destiny's mysterious factions explained

Destiny is home to at least three (and possibly five or more) factions - but what the heck are they? And how do you get their stuff?

Playing the Destiny beta (or alpha; hello!) you may have come across the Dead Orbit, Future War Cult and New Monarchy. Each faction has vendors in the Tower, but none of us had the requisites to purchase anything.

What are these groups? What do they want? How do you win their favour? How do you get your sticky paws on that sweet loot?
