How to choose your race and gender in Destiny

Destiny offers a choice of three races and two genders. But what are the differences?

Destiny players have to think carefully about what class to play, because each of them plays quite differently at high levels. Gender and race, on the other hand, are purely cosmetic.

That's not to say the choices don't matter, because they do. Sure, you'll be wearing a helmet so much that your hairstyle isn't hugely important, but the real difference between genders and races is in emotes.

All three races and both genders use the same "point" emote, so don't worry too much about that one. Male characters sit with their knees up and elbows resting on them, while female characters sit with their legs folded to one side. That's the first point of differentiation.

More interestingly, the "hello" emote varies by race and gender: humans wave, Awoken bow and the Exo salute. Each gender has its own animation, and there are quite noticable differences in the Awoken's bow gesture between the two genders, especially.

But none of that matters compared to the dance emote. Each combination of race and gender dances in a very different way, and some of them are - ugh.

The video below is an oldie but a goodie from Puzzles, showing off all the emotes. Study it carefully before you fire up the character creator. Imagine if you loaded up a human male without realising the flailing-arm horror that awaits you? It's not something that should catch you unawares.

Bungie's latest officially launches on September 9 on PlayStation 3, PS4, Xbox 360 and Xbox One, but the Destiny servers go live at noon GMT Monday, so if you already have your copy, go for it.
