What was up with those big tough guys in the Destiny beta?

Destiny blocks off high level areas with "bouncers", Bungie has explained.

Destiny presents different level enemies depending on where you are, what mission or activity you've selected, and whether you've opted for a higher difficulty.

Regardless of these choices, though, there were areas in the beta where enemies were just way too high levelled for even the toughest players to cope with.

Bungie has confirmed that these intriguing enemies were placed deliberately to keep players out of areas where they shouldn't have been - but also to offer them a chance to do it anyway, if they really wanted to.

"We call those guys 'bouncers,'" Derek Caroll, senior designer told GameInformer.

"There are places you can go and some people made a sport of it, where you can speed-run through. If anybody hits you, you're dead, but you can speed-run through and get to the other side and see places you're technically not supposed to be.

"You're in danger, and you can see there's much more to the destinations. If there's a door, you're going to want to walk through it. But we put it just out of reach for a while."

The beta had several of these enemies because Bungie wanted to test them and ensure they were working as intended, production director Jonty Barnes said; so if you found one in a blind cave system, you now know why.

If you did make the run through these deadly, areas, you've "seen a lot of the real estate of Russia", Barnes added. As Russia is the only environment on Earth, and one of just four regions which will be available in the final build (Earth, the Moon, Mercury and Mars), that's a little disappointing - but Barnes went on to say that Destiny is "a huge game".

"There's the four planets (if you call the Moon a planet). Those are huge spaces, and it's way bigger than anything Bungie has ever created before," he said.

"It's not just about pure real estate. There are activities as you get to a higher level that will drive you back to the Cosmodrome. It's got this point that when you get toward exploring a lot of the areas, we still have new things for you to do.

"We're always going to be changing it up. We haven't even talked about raids or other things like that."

Destiny is due on PlayStation 3, PS4, Xbox 360 and Xbox One on September 9. You know the deal by now; I'm ready.
