Destiny 2 - here's how the new Masterworks weapon system introduced in the latest update works

Bungie has introduced a new tier for Legendary weapons into Destiny 2 in its latest update - but how does it work exactly?

As of update 1.1.1, Legendary weapons can now drop as Masterworks. This means that they'll have an additional perk slot, with the slot assigning a random perk, ala all the perks in Destiny 1.

This means that Legendary weapons can have some unique elements to them now, and if you don't like the Masterworks perk, you can re-roll...although there's a high cost associated.

It's a new system, and it takes a little work to wrap your head around it. Thankfully, Arekkz has put together a quick video guide that will catch you right up. We've embedded it and written out the key information below, because we love writing Destiny 2 hints and tips for you (as evidenced by our huge Destiny 2 guide).

This extra perk slot on a Masterwork weapon will improve your gun slightly - you might get better handling, a faster reload, more orbs generated, that sort of thing - and it can track kills as well. You can 'rework' a weapon so that it can track Crucible kills too.

To rework weapons, though, you'll need Masterwork cores. You unlock these cores by dismantling Masterwork Legendaries, and you unlock them...through good luck. Legendary drops will occasionally be Masterworks, basically, and they can come from any source you'd usually get Legendaries from. Raids and Trials of the Nine give you a better shot of dropping some nice loot on you, but of course that's hard work, and they're not super common.

Hopefully over time we'll come to learn about more of the Masterworks perks, but something important to note is that if you've collected enough Masterworks cores, you can also upgrade your Legendary weapons from vanilla Destiny 2. Here are our favourite Legendary weapons - these might be worth a Masterworks core upgrade.

Of course, you can't upgrade your Exotics in the same way, but you want your Legendaries to be as strong as possible, right? The new Masterworks system means that your individual guns might feel more unique, although it seems like there's a lot of grinding involved to get the best ones.
