Destiny 2 had over 1.2 million concurrent players over the weekend

We hardly ever hear concurrent player numbers for big AAA games, but Destiny 2 is an exception.

Over the weekend, Bungie sent a tweet that revealed, for the first time, the number of concurrent Destiny 2players across PS4 and Xbox One.

That number was over 1.2 million, which is massive considering the game isn't even out on PC yet. For reference, PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds, the biggest game on PC right now, only crossed over the 1 million concurrent milestone on Friday.

I mean, we're not super surprised; there's been plenty of activity on our Destiny 2 guide to suggest lots of people were logged in. But still!

Although this does not tell us how many copies the game sold in its opening week, it does help extrapolate. The simple fact that Bungie decided to share those numbers is itself a big sign of confidence.

Earlier today, we learned that the game's physical launch in the UK wasn't as big as Destiny 1's. This may very well be a side effect of players going digital, and the concurrent player numbers prove that Activision has nothing to worry about.

It'll be interesting to see if Bungie will share the same information for the PC version come October.
