Dead Rising is going to be a movie, but it's not coming to cinemas

Dead Rising is going to be a movie, thanks to Legendary Pictures' new digital label.

Although it will be a full-length feature, Dead Rising is heading straight to Sony's video on demand service, Crackle.

Video-on-demand is not the kiss of death straight-to-video is, of course, and in this case seems quite deliberate; according to a Variety report, it's the first project to come out of Legendary Digital Media, the new digital-focused arm of Legendary Pictures.

The feature will be produced by Lorenzo di Bonaventura, who's behind the Transformers franchise, and although a director has not been named the script comes courtesy of Contradiction Films' Tim Carter. Contradiction produced the Mortal Kombat: Legacy series, which wasn't too awful and was certainly enjoyed far and wide.

Outside of territories where Crackle is a thing, the film will be distributed by Content Media Corp. It will be released on other video services as well as TV and DVD after its Crackle period ends.

The Dead Rising franchise has sold over 6.5 million copies worldwide, and I suppose this was inevitable; The Walking Dead has brought zombies back into mainstream media's attention as a viable thing after a few years' respite. Let's hope Frank's in it.
