No, DayZ is not a PlayStation 4 exclusive

Back in August, when Deal Hall, creative director of DayZ, took the Sony stage at gamescom 2014 to announce that DayZ is coming to PS4, many thought that could mean it would only come to the Sony console. Today, we learn that Hall is in fact considering bringing the sandbox shooter to more platforms.

"DayZ is definitely going to be a multi-platform title - that's the firm vision from Bohemia's standpoint. But we'll announce what all the other platforms are as we get to that point," he said, speaking to Eurogamer at EGX last week.

Hall added that despite that, a release date and whether or not the game would be an Early Access-type release, has yet to be made.

"There's a lot of problems with Early Access on PC that definitely are at the forefront of people's minds," he added. "So when DayZ will release would depend very much on what Sony offers in terms of if it was going to do an Early Access program, what it looks like. Then also the state of DayZ - does it make sense to do it through that?"

But if DayZ were to be successful on a console, the UI would have to be overhauled to be usable on a controller, without undermining the complexity and freedom it currently enjoys on PC. Hall is aware of that and plans to play to the strengths of consoles.

"The PC was the loser in that," he said, referring to how the Skyrim UI was translated to PC. "Because the UI had to be dumbed down. That's a good example of something we absolutely do not want to happen."

Hall has always been keen on the idea of bringing DayZ to consoles, especially PlayStation 4, but that was way back in June of last year, before Microsoft had communicated its ID@Xbox program, and before the -generally likeable- Phil Spencer took over the Xbox division.

Do you think a game as complex as DayZ could work on consoles?
