Dauntless soars past 5 million players

Dauntless' player count swelled over the weekend.

According to a tweet on the official Dauntless Twitter account, more than 5 million players have picked up the free-to-play, multiplayer monster-slaying game. That's one million more players than Friday, when the company passed the 4 million mark.

A boon in player count isn't unexpected from a free-to-play game. Apex Legends, Respawn's squad-based shooter that stealth launched earlier this year, crossed 10 million players in its first three days, 25 million by the end of its first week, and 50 million players around the one-month mark.

Dauntless isn't a shooter, so it isn't fair to compare it directly to Apex Legends – the audiences for both games are very different. Dauntless is an online multiplayer game that takes after Monster Hunter where players hunt big monsters and defeat them in real-time combat. Its audience is a little more niche, but five million players is still an impressive number.

If a free-to-play Monster Hunter game with a Fortnite art scheme sounds like your jam, you can give Dauntless a go on Xbox One, PS4, or PC (where it's an Epic Games Store exclusive). Like those games, there are weekly challenges for you to complete.
