First Dark Souls Remastered gameplay shows a modest upgrade

Dark Souls Remastered may have a few things going for it, but visuals don't seem to be one of them.

Since Dark Souls Remastered was first announced, fans have been anxious to see just how far Namco is going to take the visuals, frame-rate, and general presentation.

We already know it'll run at 4k, 60fps on PS4 Pro and Xbox One X, which is a big upgrade over the sub-720p 30fps original. Even the Prepare to Die Edition PC release couldn't achieve 60fps out of the box.

The player count upgrade in co-op and PvP in Dark Souls Remastered is another big addition. Unfortunately, visuals seems to have gotten the least attention.

We've recently been to Namco to play Dark Souls Remastered and managed to capture some footage (from a PS4 Pro) while there. The video below has 30 minutes of footage showing the opening couple of levels right up until the Taurus Demon in Undead Burg.

The visual upgrades are not as pronounced as we might have hoped. Some parts look sharper for sure, but these are harder to spot since a lot of it looks about the same. Granted, these are only the early parts of the game and later areas could fare better.

Until technical analysis delivers the final verdict, however, you'll have to trust your eyes.

Dark Souls Remastered is out May 25 on PC, PS4, Xbox One, and Nintendo Switch. A network test will take place sometime before launch on PS4, Xbox One, and Switch.
