Dark Souls 3: How to Get the Catarina Armor Set - Find Patches, Siegward

Learn how to dress like an onion knight.

This article will show players how to find Unbreakable Patches and obtain the Catarina Armor Set in Dark Souls 3. There are two ways to get the Catarina Armor Set, and both methods require completing quests that involve Siegward of Catarina. Follow along with our steps to pursue Siegward’s storyline and obtain your own Catarina Armor.

The Catarina Set is a hefty armor set that is worn by Siegward of Catarina, who resembles a familiar NPC from the first Dark Souls. Each armor piece is quite heavy, and can slow your movements depending on your equipment load. However, hindered movement is a small price to pay in order to dress as everyone’s favorite onion knight.

As previously mentioned, obtaining the Catarina Armor Set involves completing some or all of the quests for Siegward of Catarina. Siegward’s quests are also tied to other NPCs, including Unbreakable Patches and Greirat. To explain how to get his armor, we must trek into spoiler territory regarding the storylines for these characters in Dark Souls 3. We will essentially be going over the entire quest line for Siegward, so take this as a spoiler warning.

Players have the opportunity to obtain the Catarina Set at two different times during Siegward’s questline. Unbreakable Patches plays a direct role in obtaining the armor set and completing Siegward’s quests. We will begin by explaining how to meet Siegward of Catarina for the first time, and when to expect to find him again throughout the game.

Meet Siegward in Undead Settlement

Your first encounter with Siegward of Catarina is in the Undead Settlement. Travel to the giant tower to the southeast of the Curse-rotted Greatwood boss chamber. Along the way, you will pass by a series of manservants wielding clay pots, as well as an NPC named Eygon of Carim. Upon entering the large doors at the base of the tower, you will be greeted by a confused Siegward, who arrives via the elevator.

Speak with Siegward to get acquainted with this character, then ride the elevator to the top. Meet the giant, then come back down. As you ride the lift back down, you’ll hear a subtle “Hmm…”. This is your cue to jump off of the lift and land on a wooden platform inside the elevator shaft. Outside on the ledge, you’ll find Siegward pondering over an enemy in the distance. Speak to him once more, and follow our steps on how to defeat the fire demon to proceed with this side mission.

Find the Cleansing Chapel Well

The next place you will find Siegward is at the bottom of a well outside of the Cathedral of the Deep. Outside of the Cleansing Chapel Bonfire, look for a well in the corner beside a praying hollow. Approach the well, and listen for a distress call from Siegward. Speak to him at the well to find that his armor has gone missing.

This is where Unbreakable Patches comes in. To get Siegward’s armor, you must meet Patches and follow through with the steps in his quest. There are two different ways to meet Patches, and both scenarios involve some sort of prank that you must forgive.

Unbreakable Patches Location #1

Begin exploring the Cathedral of the Deep, and proceed to open the large double doors on both the upper floor and on the ground level beside the giant’s feet. With the front cathedral doors open, head back to the bonfire and rest, or travel to reload the area. Return to the double doors on the upper floor of the cathedral. These are the doors on the second floor directly across from Rosaria and the giant.

Enter these doors and head to the right. Depending on your circumstances, you will meet an NPC dressed as Siegward. This is Unbreakable Patches, and he is a bit of a prankster. He will trick you into crossing the bridge nearby. When you do, the first sleeping giant will come to attack you, so be prepared. Afterward, return to the upper floor to speak with Patches. Forgive him, and he will open up shop. Browse his inventory to find the full Catarina Armor Set for sale.

Unbreakable Patches Location #2

If you can’t seem to find Patches in the Cathedral, don’t worry. You will have another opportunity to meet him back at Firelink Shrine. Return to Firelink Shrine and purchase the Tower Key from the Shrine Handmaid. From the entrance to the shrine, go up the stairs to the right. Head through the rounded archways to go outside. Just past the mysterious tree is a locked tower gate. Use the Tower Key to open the door, and ascend the spiral stairs up the tower.

Go across the bridge that connects to the next tower. Stand on the elevator and ride the lift to the upper level. As you go up, you’ll hear the gate shut behind you. Ride the elevator back down to find that Unbreakable Patches has locked you in the tower. After your conversation, carefully drop down onto the stone platforms on the wall across from the ledge you’re standing on. Make your way down the series of platforms to reach the bottom. Exit through the gate door on the ground level.

Head back inside Firelink Shrine, and go up to the second floor towards the tower. Instead of going out the rounded archways, go around the corner to the left and you’ll find Unbreakable Patches at the end. Speak to him once more, and forgive his actions. He will open up shop in this location to sell you various items, including the Catarina Armor Set.

Purchase the Catarina Armor Set

The Catarina Armor Set consists of four armor pieces: Catarina Helm, Catarina Armor, Catarina Gauntlets, and Catarina Leggings. Each piece costs 3,500 souls, except for the Catarina Armor which costs 4,500 souls. Patches will also sell Siegward’s Pierce Shield, but purchasing this item is optional.

If you are simply looking to obtain the Catarina Armor Set, then you can purchase them right now from Patches and never look back. However, there is one more opportunity to obtain the Catarina armor, which involves completing Siegward’s storyline. From here, we are going to assume you want to proceed with Siegward’s full storyline, and we will explain the steps accordingly.

Return the Armor to Siegward

After purchasing all four Catarina Armor pieces from Patches, travel back to the Cleansing Chapel and speak to Siegward in the well. When prompted, select the option to give Siegward his armor and drop it down the well. This of course removes the armor set from your inventory. You can still get the armor, as long as you complete Siegward’s storyline properly.

Meet Siegward in the Kitchen

The next opportunity to meet Siegward is in Irithyll of the Boreal Valley. Head to this location and explore the area to reach the Distant Manor Bonfire. Outside of the bonfire, look for a sewer entrance connected to the nearby lake. Explore the sewers to find a small kitchen area. You’ll see Siegward snoozing near the fireplace. Speak with him for some brief conversation, and another toast of Siegbrau.

Note: you must meet Siegward in the kitchen to fully complete his storyline and obtain his armor set. If you proceed to Irithyll Dungeon before finding Siegward in the kitchen, you will meet him in the dungeon, but risk not being able to get his armor.

Find Siegward in Irithyll Dungeon

Continue through the area until you discover Irithyll Dungeon. Explore the dungeon and make your way to the bottom of the pit containing the large sleeping giant. Hordes of rats will be swarming the ground at the giant’s feet. Kill the rats until they are no longer a problem.

On this ground level, look for a prison cell window. Peek inside to find Siegward, locked in a prison cell. If you have already reached Irithyll Dungeon prior to meeting Siegward in the kitchen, he will only be found in the prison cell instead, and you likely cannot obtain his armor.

Find the Old Cell Key

To free Siegward, you must obtain the Old Cell Key to unlock his prison cell. From the Irithyll Dungeon Bonfire, head forward into the dungeon and cross the bridge to the other side of the cell block. Unlock the gate at the end of the corridor and proceed down the stairs in the room to the right. Exit the room and head to the left. Go through the gate door at the far end of the path to reach an outer stone staircase.

Enter the next doorway to a passage full of Jailers. Proceed to the far end of the hall, and look for a small doorway on the right. Go through the doorway and drop down onto a rocky ledge. To the left is an entrance to a sewer full of rats. Head up the stairs at the far side of the sewer, and continue to the end of the tunnel where you will find two chests. Watch out for a horde of Basilisks who ambush you from behind. One chest is a Mimic, and the other contains the Old Cell Key. The Mimic drops the Dark Clutch Ring when defeated.

Unlock the Prison Cell

To reach Siegward’s cell door, you must travel to the Profaned Capital, just beyond Irithyll Dungeon. Start at the Profaned Capital Bonfire, located in a broken tower at the end of a long stone bridge. From the bonfire, climb down the ladder in the center. Look for a broken section of wall, and drop down to the lower level outside the tower.

Cross the wooden footpath to the left and enter a narrow corridor. Go straight to the end of the passage, and enter the doorway on the right. Drop down into the sludge below, but be careful, as this sludge is poisonous. Climb the ladder at the corner of the structure to reach the upper ledge, and proceed around the corner along the rooftop.

Go up the stairs and get onto the blue pointed rooftop of the church. Stand at the edge of the roof, and jump across over the stairs to reach the window of the adjacent building. Ascend the staircase in the next room and use the Old Cell Key to unlock Siegward’s prison cell. Speak to Siegward once more to receive a Titanite Slab, and be sure to collect the Covetous Gold Serpent Ring off the corpse.

Battle Yhorm the Giant

Continue through the structure in the Profaned Capital to reach the boss chamber for Yhorm the Giant. If you successfully freed Siegward, a cut scene will occur as soon as you traverse the fog for this boss encounter. Siegward will now join you for the fight against Yhorm the Giant, making the battle significantly easier. There is no summon sign for him, he will just automatically join you. Note that if you already defeated Yhorm before freeing Siegward, you cannot obtain the armor set.

If you die during the boss battle, Siegward will return to help you again, and will be already waiting at the boss chamber. However, if Siegward dies during the battle, he does not return a second time, and will instead leave his armor set behind. It’s not likely that he will perish during the fight though, as Siegward is pretty much a beast during the battle.

When Yhorm the Giant is defeated, speak to Siegward one final time for a victory toast. Return to this boss chamber later to collect Siegward’s full Catarina Armor Set on the floor, along with his Storm Ruler weapon. Of course, you can always kill Siegward yourself to obtain his armor, but that’s not something a noble companion would do.

Now that you know how to obtain the Catarina Set, you are free to roam about Lothric dressed as a true Onion Bro. For more tips and features, head over to USGamer’s Dark Souls 3 Walkthrough and Guide.
