Criterion's new IP sounds like a GoPro sim

Criterion's new project isn't Burnout or Need for Speed, but a first-person extreme sports sim partially inspired by GoPro cameras.

Although the project is in the incredibly early stages, Criterion discussed the germ of its idea at E3 2014 - a game that lets you race around in loads of different modes of transport besides cars. Examples include "a wingsuit or a parachute, a plane, a helicopter, an ATV or an MX bike".

Speaking to VideoGamer, Criterion general manager Matt Webster said the idea was partially inspired by the recent, growing popularity of head-mounted GoPro cameras.

"Those cameras are becoming ubiquitous in the real world. I was in Switzerland in February and there were kids as young as six wearing [them]," he said.

"Teenagers are all over this s**t and it's defining how the world sees particular types of action, and that's the type of action that we love. So for us it felt, yeah, that's the way we need to go.

The core idea means players will even run around on foot.

"We've got a character for the first time and we'll have some on-foot play as well. We know and love vehicle-to-vehicle interaction; it's our bread and butter, it's the excitement and the action that people love. But we also think that person and vehicle interactions are really important and exciting," Webster said.

And yes, as you'd expect, Criterion is playing around with VR technology, with Webster calling the new project "the best Oculus game you've ever played".
