Capcom blames "cannibalism" for less than expected Street Fighter x Tekken sales

Capcom has said sales of Street Fighter x Tekken has fallen short of the company's expectations, citing genre cannibalism as the reason why.

It announced last week the fighter had sold 1.4 million units since its release in early March.

"Sales of Street Fighter X Tekken have fallen short of our plan," it said in a Q&A.

"We believe one of [the] causes is cannibalism because of the large number of other games in this genre that were launched within a short time."

Capcom's launched three versions of Street Fighter IV in the past four years: the vanilla version in 2009, Super in 2010 and Arcade Edition in 2011.

The publisher also said the announcement of 2 million copies shipped of Resident Evil: Operation Raccoon City with Slant Six redeemed its approach in bringing a western studio for development.

Resident Evil: Operation Raccoon City has reached shipments of 2 million units). This shows the success of our decision to try the new approach of using an alliance with an overseas development company."
