Call of Duty Is Doing World War 2, Oh Look a New Nintendo 2DS, and the Rest of This Week's Headlines

ENDING CREDITS | Taking a look a back at this week's headlines and everything else you might have missed on USgamer.

This article first appeared on USgamer, a partner publication of VG247. Some content, such as this article, has been migrated to VG247 for posterity after USgamer's closure - but it has not been edited or further vetted by the VG247 team.

Whew, another week done. I don't know about the rest of you, but I'm ready to ball it up, drop-kick it down the street, and watch it roll down into the gutter.

The biggest piece of news was probably the recently-revealed New Nintendo 2DS XL. It's sleek, it's compact, it has the processing power of the New Nintendo 3DS, and it's 2D. I pointed out that if this is indeed the Nintendo 3DS's final SKU, we can assume the Nintendo 3DS's 3D projection gimmick was ultimately a flop.

Some of you already disagree with me. Feel free to rage in the comments! I'll read them over a nice mug of hot chocolate with a sizable shot of Fireball whisky.

Here are the other important headlines and features we published this week.

  • There's a Splatoon manga coming! That takes the sting away from knowing Callie and Marie are probably mad at each other in Splatoon 2.
  • What was gaming discourse like before the Internet was widespread? These letters to the editors of various '90s game magazines should give you a clue.
  • Sometimes you just wanna go where everyone knows your name ... even if you're forced to peer into the very depths of your own corrupt soul as soon as you walk in the door. Caty rounds up the best bars and cafes in video games.
  • We all collectively died of shock at the news that the next Call of Duty game is a shooter based on the Second World War. As Kat said, "What, were you expecting the Anglo-Iraqi war?"
  • Academic / game designer Ian Bogost believes video games should ditch narrative. I disagree.
  • Kat has an awakening about Persona 5's dungeons. Speaking of Persona 5, Atlus has gone back on its streaming restrictions. Umm, kiiiind of....?
  • The Nintendo Switch, she's selling like-a crazy.
  • Capcom's sales are down. It promises a release based on a major property "for this fiscal year." This is where I'm obligated to say "Mega Man, lol." Well, at least Ultron Sigma looks pretty sweet in Marvel vs Capcom Infinite.
  • Mr Parish talks about Link's plunge into the Dark World in the latest Design in Action installment of The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past.
  • Finally, Doc Burford explores Mad Max's underrated post-apocalyptic world.

And we're done. Thanks for joining us for another week. Let's wrap things up with the ending music for Super Mario Bros 2, which is good stuff. That animated image of Mario sleeping during the credits roll was pretty impressive back in the day – and I still think it's cute.

Kudos to the player for splitting all the stages evenly across Mario, Luigi, Princess, and Toad. I'm an "all Luigi all the time" gal, though I don't mind giving Toad a fair shake when it's time to dig in those damnable desert levels. Once he's done with that, though, he goes back behind the Player Select curtain.

Have a good one.
