Call of Duty: Ghosts guide - complete single-player walkthrough

The latest version of the world's biggest shooter is here. Take control of Call of Duty: Ghost's single-player campaign with our complete mission-by-mission walkthrough.

Call of Duty: Ghosts is here. The cross-generation Infinity Ward shooter - the sixth in the series developed by the studio - takes the action to space while keeping its feet on the ground. Ghosts is the tenth main game in the Call of Duty franchise.

The single-player guide you'll find below will walk you through an adventure which takes place behind enemy lines. You play as a Ghost, a special forces operative, in an alternate reality in which the Middle East has been destroyed by a nuclear war. Oil-producing nations from South America have joined forces in response to the global crisis brought about by the war, and have invaded Central America and the Caribbean. Known as the Federation, this new global superpower has commenced with hostilities towards the US, seizing an orbital super-weapon and attacking several cities in southern America. While astronauts aboard the satellite manage to self-destruct the weapon, the Federation forms a front based on the successful attack from space and becomes embroiled in a stalemated land war with the US.

The Ghosts, led by retired Army Captain Elias Walker, is joined by his sons Logan and David as they attempt to thwart the Federation offensive and drive back the invasion from the south and "neutralize" Almagro and Rorke, the leaders of the Federation.

Call of Duty: Ghost's plot takes place in 2023. The game's development has been noted from its inclusion of dog buddy AI, become bogged down in "resolutiongate" towards its release, after Infinity Ward confirmed that the PlayStation 4 version runs at native 1080p, whereas the Xbox One version was limited to 720p. Aside from the PS3, Xbox 360, PS4, Xbox One and PC versions, a Wii U version has also been completed. Treyarch was responsible for the Nintendo version.

Multiplayer obviously forms a massive part of this latest Call of Duty game. Ghosts introduces seven new modes to Call of Duty.

Search and Rescue is a new version of Search and Destroy: instead of having a single life per round, players can now be revived by their team. Cranked charges the player with killing enemies quickly, before a timer reaches zero. The timer's reset every time a kill's made, and movement is speeded up. Hectic stuff.

Free For All is an old favourite, in which players must get a total of 30 kills or the most kills in a 10 minute time limit. Team Deathmatch is what it is: two teams, 10 minutes, 75 kill limit.

Search and Destroy gives each team five minutes to either plant a bomb or defend a position. There are no respawns in this mode, and the game ends if a team wins four rounds. Domination also returns: three flags are scattered around map, the idea being the control key areas. Every two seconds a flag in controlled will gain a player's team a point. If a controls two or three flags they gain two or three points respectively. The first team to 200 points, or whoever has the highest amount of points after 10 minutes, wins.

Kill Confirmed is similar to Team Deathmatch, but dead players drop dog tags. You pick up enemy dog tags for points. First team to 100 points wins the game.

With plenty of other modes and the prospect of testing out various version on different hardware, Call of Duty: Ghosts stands to be one of the biggest games of both 2013 and 2014. As if there were any doubt. Before you get into multiplayer, though, you'll want to blast through the campaign to ensure you've got your eye in. Be sure to bookmark this page so you'll never get stuck as you work through the plot. Get to it, men. America won't save itself.
