Bloodborne sometimes "struggles to run at a smooth frame-rate" per performance analysis

Bloodborne has been analyzed by Digital Foundry and according to the report, even with a 30fps cap the game sometimes "struggles to run at a smooth frame-rate."

The game's day-one 2.69GB update 1.01 is "essential" as it contains improvements to game performance and stability and the frame-rate tests run by Digital Foundry were in single-player only "without any potential strain of co-op play," as co-op was added with the day-one update.

According to tests run in Central Yarnham and the Hunter's Dream hub areas, framerate drops were infrequent but at times the performance dropped to 24fps.

The drops were attributed to such a high level of detail and the "staggering" density of objects which is why a 60fps target "was always a stretch for the game."

That being said, level-of-detail transitions are "too discrete to catch by eye," and when noticeable, it's only for a "split-second" when loading into a new area. For the most part, it "streams in assets without a sweat."

Also noted in the report are loading times which were longer than From Software's Souls titles, some taking between 40-45 seconds to complete which Digital Foundry found "patience-testing" due to the number of deaths the player can face.

Despite the framerate issues and loading times, Digital Foundry found that Bloodborne "stands up among From Software's most memorable creations," despite some of its technical shortfalls. Again, the report noted the issues seem to stem from the scale of its world, and a future patch would likely smooth the rough points.

Bloodborne is out today in North America on PlayStation 4, and is getting rather high scores all around. Be sure to give our reviews round up a look for all the numbers.

The game arrives in Europe on March 25.
