Blizzcon 2020 cancelled, but an online event in the works for early next year

This year's Blizzcon will, unsurprisingly, not take place.

Blizzard, which said last month that it was too early to tell whether Blizzcon 2020 will be held, has now officially cancelled this year's show.

"During this time, we’ve had many discussions about what holding a convention could look like in light of all the health and safety considerations we’d want to make," Blizzcon executive producer Saralyn Smith wrote.

"We’ve also talked about different paths we could take, and how each one could be complicated by fluctuations in national and local health guidelines in the months ahead. Ultimately, after considering our options, we’ve come to the very difficult decision to not have Blizzcon this year."

It's not all bad news, however, because Blizzard is currently exploring the possibility of an online event, but that will likely take place sometime early next year. Blizzard is also trying to figure out how to support the competitive community now that Blizzcon's various tournaments will not be take place.

More details about Blizzard's plans for the esports scene will be revealed in the future.

Last year's Blizzcon was one of its biggest, hosting reveals for Diablo 4 and Overwatch 2. We do hope we'll be seeing more of those games this year in some way.
