Blizzard "doing an investigation," into Diablo III on consoles

Blizzard CEO Mike Morhaime said during his talk at DICE yesterday that the firm is still looking into the possibility of Diablo III on consoles, but for now the firm prefers PC as a platform due to its flexibility.

"I think you could make an argument that a game like Diablo might play very well on a console," said Morhaime. "It's something that we're actually doing an investigation into to see if that could make sense."

However, the Blizzard president feels there are still a "number of issues," that would need to be addressed before a consoles version is created. One hurdle is the ability to patch add expansions, actions which are much easier on PC.

Morhaime did, however, nod in agreement when asked if Dibalo III would be the easiest of Blizzard's games to port over to consoles.

Last night during a financial call to investors, CFO Thomas Tippl said not to expect another release for Blizzard this year, but that two would be coming in 2012 - meaning the first expansion for StarCraft II and possibly Diablo III.

"Because Blizzard Entertainment has not yet confirmed the launch date for its next global release, our outlook [for 2011] at this time does not include the new game from Blizzard in 2011," he said. "Should we not release a major title from Blizzard this year, we would expect, for planning purposes, to launch a minimum of two Blizzard titles in 2012."

Thanks, Joystiq.
