Biomutant's day one Steam numbers already impressive

It's only been out for a day, but already Biomutant has attracted some impressive player numbers – and that's just on Steam.

After yesterday's launch, it's clear that the world has a soft spot for Experiment 101's open-world, post-apocalyptic RPG. Something about the free-form kung-fu combat has certainly drawn people in, with SteamDB registering 55,048 players at the game's peak yesterday.

Once you add those numbers to however many units publisher THQ Nordic shifted on other platforms, it's likely we'll see the game chart quite well when the rankings are released next week.

The game hasn't done too badly then, especially given the mixed reviews we saw the first game from the fledgling developer pick up ahead of its launch.

"I don’t think Biomutant is a great game, but it’s a game that is far from a complete disaster and one that still manages to consistently offer a good time," said our own Tom Orry in his definitely-not-a-review of the title.

If you're keen to hold off on picking up the game until it has dedicated PS5 and Xbox Series X/S upgrades, you may be waiting a while. The game will be playable new consoles via backwards compatibility at launch, but “sometime in the near-ish future” a native version for new-generation hardware is coming.

The same goes for anyone eager to play on Stadia or Switch; something may happen eventually, but not any time soon.

“For now, we are pinpoint-focussed on executing an awesome release on May 25 2021,” the developer has said, but more platforms could come later. “Only time will tell” if the game gets ported elsewhere.
