Ben "Yahtzee" Croshaw releasing horror rogue-like The Consuming Shadow

The Consuming Shadow is a new horror rogue-like from Ben "Yahtzee" Croshaw. It's currently in beta.

You can download The Consuming Shadow for Windows now. Over on the games blog, Croshaw likens the game to FTL: Faster Than Light, Eternal Darkness, and a board game called Arkham Horror, all with a Lovecraftian veneer.

Plot-wise, the game takes place in a country that has been consumed by darkness, with all sorts of monstrosities spawning into the world. It's all a precursor to an ancient god appearing at Stonehenge in 72 hours, and it's up to you to gather four necessary components for the Banishment Ritual to see the deity packing.

You also have to determine which of three possible gods is the real enemy. Croshaw also warns that you can go mad and shoot yourself in the head, which sounds lovely.

It's a 2D game full of clue-gathering, random elements, perma-death and a level-based progression system.
