Battlefront 3 gameplay footage emerges from the mists of 2008

It's like millions of fans cried out in renewed frustration, and were suddenly silenced.

New Battlefront 3 emerges from the mists of 2008

Star Wars Battlefront is enjoyable enough - even if it's only just becoming the game we hoped for via DLC - but it will always leave fans wondering what might have been. That's because LucasArts cancelled the hotly anticipated Battlefront 3 as it neared launch, ending our dreams of battles where you could fly from planetary surfaces to outer space. We'll never know whether Battlefront 3 would have been successful, but we do have a glimpse of what it looked like thanks to gameplay footage from a 2008 build of the game.

The video reveals a small portion of Battlefront 3's story campaign, as Old Republic heroes X1 and X2 arrive on Tatooine for a new assignment. Even considering the alpha build and dated 2008 graphics, it doesn't look like much at first. The voice acting is incredibly basic, while the ship interiors are drab and dreary compared to other Star Wars titles.

Then X1 and X2 fly out of the hangar on their star fighters. Shortly afterwards, they head to Tatooine's surface without encountering a single loading screen. And all those old wounds opened again.

A second video picks up where the first left off, following the heroes as they respond to a Tusken Raider attack. Here the build's alpha status becomes more apparent, with literal sound effects declaring they are placeholders. Yet the larger scope of the missions is far more apparent, emphasized by the giant spaceships visible in the distant Tantooine sky.

The good news is modern development teams are picking up where Battlefront 3 left off. If the upcoming Death Star expansion isn't your cup of tea, there's a free Galaxy of Turmoil game in development attempt to replicate Battlefront 3's gameplay.
