Battlefield 3 mod allows unofficial dedicated servers, more

Battlefield 3 has gotten a new mod that may breath new life into it.

It's been years since the release of Battlefield 3, and a bit less since the game was relevant. Sure, it's still played by a dedicated group, but almost everyone moved on to Battlefield 4 or other games. Except modders, one group of which is responsible for the new Venice Unleashed mod.

The mod reverse engineers the game's server code, letting users run dedicated servers on any capable machine, something which heretofore was only possible through official EA server partners. This allows users to run any sort of rule-sets they like, but will mostly benefit mods, due to level of access they require in order to bring meaningful changes to the core game.

In the video above, Westie goes into detail about what you can expect from Venice Unleashed, and what it means for the Battlefield community. There's also a look at under-the-hood improvements that he thinks should be in the vanilla Battlefield 3.
