Cross-play and cross-progression in the works for Battlefield 2042, to be tested in tech test

Cross-progression and cross-play are in the works for Battlefield 2042, and DICE is planning to test the features out during a technical test.

News of a cross-progression and cross-play technical test for Battlefield 2042  has been announced by EA.

According to the information provided, a subset of cross-play functionality will be tested during the Technical Playtest. This means during this test, PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X/S users will be able to test playing together.

Beyond the technical playtest, DICE said it is still building cross-play functionality, and so the first go-round with it will be through the invite-only group added to the Technical Playtest. PC and console users can opt out from playing together.

During the test, the aforementioned will not be able to play with those on Xbox One and PS4 players. These console users can play together, though.

Alongside cross-play, the development team is also building cross-progression and cross-commerce. This will be shared across all platforms and will travel with you no matter which platform you choose. So, for example, your unlocked progress, and purchases in your PlayStation copy of the game will carry over onto the Xbox or PC version, and vice versa.

The Technical Playtest will occur later this summer, and a few thousand participants will be asked to test new features and functionality.  There aren't sign-ups available, as EA will contact those chosen directly, but if you are interested, be sure any information included in your profile when you signed up for EA Playtesting is current and accurate. That said, registering for EA Playtesting will not guarantee you access to this, or other Playtests.

Battlefield 2042 releases later this year on October 22 for PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, and PC. Those who pre-order Gold and Ultimate Editions for PlayStation or PC can access the game as early as October 15.
