Audiosurf successor Audioshield gets first VR gameplay footage

Audioshield is a rhythm action game for virtual reality that harvests your own music library.

Drawing on Audiosurf 2's music analysis system, Audioshield provides motion-control rhythm action gameplay for whatever songs you choose to feed it, either in your local library or streamed from SoundCloud.

Again like Audiosurf, every song has its own online and local leaderboards, and gameplay varies depending on the song's tempo and texture.

"Beats glide in slowly for mellow parts of songs, then ramp up for intense parts of songs with cross-body, double-shield, and high-altitude hits," developer Dylan Fitterer wrote.

See it in action below, demonstrating Valve's Vortal Combat. This video was produced using a greenscreen to capture footage of the player's movements, allowing it to be spliced with what they're seeing in game.

It sort of reminds me a bit of Harmonix's Fantasia: Music Evolved, a game I loved but simply couldn't get working in my Kinect-unfriendly living room. Maybe the use of tracked motion controllers will be more reliable.

Audioshield will be available on Steam in April.
