Assassin’s Creed Odyssey: How to Upgrade Weapons and Armor

Weapons and armor come in four rarity levels in Assassin's Creed Odyssey, with some being significantly more powerful than others. In the guide below we'll be explaining the different levels of gear rarity in the game, as well as how to upgrade weapons and armor and find some of the best equipment in the game.

How to Upgrade Weapons and Armor in Assassin’s Creed Odyssey

Every gear item is assigned a level in Assassin’s Creed Odyssey, and Kassandra or Alexios will need to be at this character level if they want to equip said gear item. But as you level up and forge forwards in the game, your existing gear items are going to become less powerful next to ones you more recently acquire, and Common items can end up quickly outclassing Epic gear.

So, what do you do if you want to keep a gear item, but feel as though it’s lagging behind? All you need to do to upgrade an existing piece of gear is find a Blacksmith anywhere on the Assassin’s Creed Odyssey map, any of which are marked by an anvil on the map. Once you’ve found them, select the ‘Upgrade’ option, and you’ll see all your weapon and armor items that can be upgraded at the current time.

Although the Blacksmith will always upgrade an existing item to match your current character level, there’s item requirements for upgrading gear. Soft leather, iron metal, olive wood, obsidian glass, and precious gems are all types of items in Assassin’s Creed Odyssey, that are used as currency for upgrading weapons and armor. If you haven’t got enough of any one item, you’ll have to venture out into the world and track it down.

How to Equip New Weapons and Armor

If you scroll over to your ‘Inventory’ tab in the Assassin’s Creed Odyssey pause menu, you’ll come to the screen just below, with Kassandra/Alexios’ weapons on the left, and armor on the right. There’s slots for a single weapon (for now), a bow, headgear, bracers, torso armor, waist armor, and leg armor, all of which will affect the five attributes seen at the bottom of the screen, including health and armor values.

Equipment Rarity

Just below, we’ll break down the four rarity types of weapons and armor in Assassin’s Creed Odyssey.

  • Common - Your standard gear type. You’ll mostly find Common-grade weapons and armor from defeating enemies.
  • Rare - The next step up, Rare weapons and armor are most often found through killing elite enemies, or rifling through chests within locations like bandit camps.
  • Epic - The Epic-grade gear in Assassin’s Creed Odyssey is elite, and you’ll nearly always obtain this type of gear through completing certain quests.
  • Legendary - Finally, the Legendary gear type is the very best of the best in Assassin’s Creed Odyssey. Legendary weapons and armor are nearly always obtained through completing elite quests.

As we mentioned earlier, all your equipped weapons and armor goes into affecting Kassandra and Alexios’ statistics. Firstly there’s your health meter, which only goes up as you level up, and also your armor value, which is the combined force of all your equipped gear. Then there’s also your Hunter Damage, which dictates how much damage you inflict with a bow, your Warrior Damage, which governs how much damage you inflict in standard melee combat, and finally your Assassin Damage value, which lets you know how much damage you’ll inflict with a stealth attack or assassination.
