Apex Legends Switch is ambitious but you can't see s**t

Sometimes resolution doesn't matter, but in a competitive shooter it really does.

Apex Legends released on Switch this week, joining the likes of The Witcher 3, Doom Eternal, and Wolfenstein 2: The New Colossus as so-called "impossible ports." Judged from a purely technical point of view, port-masters Panic Button has once again delivered something that many might have deemed impossible, but this is a port that highlights the Switch's lack of graphical grunt more than most.

Whereas the aforementioned Switch ports each had resolution issues, they play well and you can fairly easily overlook the graphical shortcomings thanks to the magic of playing as-of-then current-gen games on a handheld. Apex Legends is a different beast altogether, though. It's a competitive shooter set in a large open area. Sight lines are everything, and when you can't tell an opponent from a rockface, we have a problem.

Don't get me wrong, I really wanted to be able to play Apex while sitting in bed, but this is one game where that heavily rumored Switch Pro would likely make a huge difference.

This is a strong port in many respects, but it's just not fit for purpose when the purpose is shooting people in the head from distance. I'm going back to play on PC.
