Another DOOM classic level from John Romero

Remember how John Romero made a new DOOM level? Well, he's done it again.

The new level is called The Inmost Dens (or E1M4b) and is available as a direct download from Dropbox. Here's the description:

"With the Toxin Refinery in the rear-view, you make your way to Phobos Mission Control where the computers crunching the data from the Phobos Anomaly are located. You need to use them to gain access to the Phobos Lab, but remember hearing that the computers were tied into all areas of the installation and that you never knew when the environment around you would change. You need to keep your eyes alert to all movement—this place is not what it seems...”

Apparently it's a bit easier than Romero's last map. The veteran designer said it features "the kind of classic FPS gameplay" he's promising to deliver with Blackroom, a new FPS created in partnership with fellow id Software alumnus Adrian Carmack.

It's a clever bit of promotion for those on the fence about the project; gameplay says a great deal more than plot-heavy videos ever can. The Blackroom Kickstarter is only a few days old and has raised over $100,000 of its $700,000 target.

What are your feelings about Romero's return to FPS design? He's been away from mainstream games for several years, working in education, social and mobile, but has never stopped talking about shooters. In a teaser for the Blackroom Kickstarter, he was compared to Luke Skywalker in Star Wars: The Fore Awakens.
