Animal Crossing New Horizons: How to Plant Flowers and Trees

You'll want to plant trees and flowers to make your island look as natural as possible in Animal Crossing New Horizons. Here's how.

Flowers and Trees are both vital resources to have on your island in Animal Crossing New Horizons. You'll need to know how to plant each, so that you can start replenishing the trees you cut down for wood, and the flower you use for crafting. In this guide we'll teach you how to plant trees, fruit trees, flowers, and how to water and move them.

How to Plant Flowers

To plant flowers, you'll need seeds (we've included info on buying those below). Walk outside to the spot you'd like the flower to be in. You'll want to be standing in the exact spot, the flowers will plant directly below you. Open your inventory and select the seeds. Select 'Plant here' and you'll plant the flowers.

How to Plant Trees

To plant trees, you will need to purchase saplings (more on that below). Once you have some, walk to the spot where you'd like to plant them. Select them in the inventory and choose 'Plant here'. This will plant the tree, no need for digging or anything.

How to Plant Fruit Trees

To grow fruit trees on your island you'll need to plant fruit. To do so, you'll need to dig a hole using a shovel (more on getting one here). Once you've dug a hole, head into your inventory and select the fruit you'd like to plant and grow. Select 'Plant 1' and you'll plant it.

How to Water Plants

To water plants you'll need a watering can. You'll get one by purchasing the Pretty Good Tools upgrade at a Nook Stop. Once you've crafted one (you'll need 5 Softwood, more on getting that here), equip it and walk over to the flowers you'd like to water. Press 'A' to water them.

What Does Watering Flowers Do?

Once you've watered a flower, it will start to sparkle. After a day or so, the flower will have caused more to grow around it. There's also a chance that flowers that are next to each other will cross-pollinate when watered, meaning you'll get new types of flower.

Do You Need to Water Trees?

You do not need to water trees in order for them to grow. Best to save your watering can for the flowers on your island.

Where to Buy New Seeds and Saplings?

To buy more seeds and tree saplings you'll need to head to Nook's Cranny. Timmy will also sell them in Resident services at the start of the game. There are a few different kinds of sapling you can buy, and many varieties of seeds. You can buy in singles, or stacks of five.

How to Move Flowers

If you'd like to move a flower anywhere else on your island, just dig it up using a shovel. The stems will go into your inventory, and you can replant them as before. To kove trees, eat fruit and then dig them up.
