Animal Crossing New Horizons: How to Get Villagers to Leave Your Island

Space is limited on your island in Animal Crossing New Horizons, so if you're not vibing with another villager you'll want to convince them to leave. Here's how to get villagers to leave.

You're only allowed a certain number of villagers in Animal Crossing New Horizons, so if you don't like someone you'll want to free up space. Problem is, getting a villager to leave is a tricky and somewhat nebulous endeavour. There are some things you can do to make someone more likely to leave though, we'll explain more in this guide.

How to Get Villagers to Leave Your Island

To get a villager to leave your island in Animal Crossing New Horizons you'll first want to stop talking to them. If they're a new villager, this will be enough for them to ask to leave on their own, as they will not have built up a relationship with you. You will need to ignore them completely, as even negative attention seems to count. This means not bumping into them, hitting them with nets, basically no contact whatsoever. There have been some suggestions that speaking to Isabelle will speed things along, though we have yet to confirm this. We managed to get a villager to leave by ignoring them and complaining to Isabelle, so it doesn't hurt to do both anyway. As we understand it however, Isabelle's complaints system is mostly for altering the way villagers dress or speak (more on that here).

Why Would You Want a Villager to Leave?

There are many reasons you'd want a villager to leave in Animal Crossing New Horizons. Some of the ones you'll get are completely random, and if you have your eye on someone else, you'll need to make space. If you don't like how the villager acts or dresses, or maybe just don't want them on your island, there are at least options to get them to leave.
