Android approaching 1 billion activations

Google's Android smartphone OS ias close to 1 billion activations, CEO Eric Schmidt said at the AllThingsD Dive Into Mobile conference.

As reported by GamesIndustry, Schimdt said Android is on track to hit the milestone "in six to nine months".

That's impressive growth, since the platform was at 1.3 billion in September 2012.

1.5 million devices are activated daily and of these, more than 750 million are currently in use. Current usage stats for iOS are tricky to find, but Apple has sold over 400 million iDevices, so even if they were all still active it's still a long way behind the multi-hardware OS.

Schmidt expects Android to cross 2 billion activations in just a year or two thanks to new, low-end, cheap devices, especially in Asia.
