American Truck Simulator update adds new truck, explains US red light rule

American Truck Simulator has been updated with a new truck and some other stuff, but let's talk about US traffic laws instead.

American Truck Simulator developer SCS Software sent over some details of the latest patch, including this delightful little gem:

"We have also improved the detection of 'turn on red' feature in the game. For drivers in Europe, it may be a surprise that in the US it's legally allowed to turn right at red traffic light, unless explicitly prohibited. So in the game, if you properly use your indicator to signal that you are turning right, no red light penalty is applied just as expected."

My amazement regarding this rule was significantly dampened by the realisation that Americans drive on the right - we're lefties here in Australia and I was imagining huge trucks sailing right across intersections on red lights. But still: red means "stop", what is this amazing new world?

Anyway, the update also adds the Kenworth W900, which is highlighted in the video below, as a free bit of DLC. Additionally, fines will be less punishing in the early stages of the game, to give newbs a chance to actually learn to play, and the speeding detection code is a bit more forgiving when transitioning to a new speed limit zone.

SCS Software said it's hard at work on more obvious speed limit signage as well as map tweaks to prevent AI ramming players. These changes are expected alongside the next major update.
