Amazon Game Studios halts development of Breakaway

Amazon Game Studios is ending Breakaway's development so its team can "focus on new ideas".

When Amazon Game Studios first announced Breakaway, it seemed like a pretty safe bet. This game was a slick-looking MOBA that featured 4x4 brawling, buildable structures, and full Twitch integration. Sadly, the game has faced multiple challenges over the past two years, ultimately prompting the studio to confirm development has stopped entirely.

"Since our last announcement, we have worked to implement community feedback and iterate on Breakaway’s core gameplay," Amazon Game Studios wrote on Reddit. "While we have developed many ideas and made a lot of progress, we are also setting a very high bar for ourselves. In spite of our efforts, we didn’t achieve the breakthrough that made the game what we all hoped it could be. After a lot of soul searching, the team decided to focus on new ideas. As a result, Breakaway is no longer in active development.

"We remain exceptionally proud of the team’s work, and feel privileged to have been a part of such a dedicated and enthusiastic community," the post continues. "We will reach out to this channel as soon as we have news to share regarding our new projects, and if a thunderbolt of inspiration strikes that leads us back to Breakaway, you’ll be the first to know."

Thankfully for Amazon, Breakaway wasn't its only project in development. The studio's two other games - Crucible and New World - are still listed on Amazon's games page and hold quite a bit of potential.

Of course, it's still possible Breakaway will be resurrected, but given how crowded the MOBA space is these days? It's pretty likely it would need a significant reworking of the original concept.
