New PS5 hardware redesign entering production in 2022 - report

A new report states that Sony is looking to redesign the PS5's hardware.

This is according to the Taiwanese outlet Digital Times (paywall), which cites industry sources.

According to the report, Sony will redesign PS5 with a "new semi-customized" 6nm CPU from AMD. At present, it seems the 5nm is too costly (thanks, Dr. Serkan Toto).

Again, this would be a spec redesign, not a console redesign. In other words, the console would feature the same performance and same enclosure, it would just be less expensive for Sony to make.

Sony is aiming for production to start on the redesign sometime during Q2 or Q3 2022.

As Toto notes, the site has a spotty track record, so take this as an unconfirmed report for the time being.

It's hard finding a PS5 right now, and part of the reason boils down to production. According to Sony CFO, Hiroki Totoki, the company is struggling to keep up with demand.

In the company's latest call to investors, Totoki stated the shortage of semiconductors was "one factor," but that there "are other factors that will impact the production volume" (thanks, T3).

Totoki also said the company is looking to surpass second-year sales of PS4 which came to 14.8 million. When asked how the company plans to do this he stated that for example, the company "could find maybe a secondary resource, or by changing the design".
