Discord comes to PlayStation early next year

PlayStation consoles will officially see the release of Discord early in 2022.

Sony announced Monday that Discord, the popular communication app on PC, will be available on its PlayStation consoles for the first time at some point in early 2022.

In the blog post breaking the news, Sony also revealed that it has made a minority investment in the company behind Discord, though did not disclose the amount. This comes just weeks after Discord reportedly ended acquisition talks with Microsoft.

Discord is, however, looking to expand, and Sony's investment came as part of a Series H round of funding. This is similar to Epic Games' regular rounds of funding, which help keep it independent while injecting money into its coffers. Sony also has a minority stake in Epic.

The specifics of Discord's launch on PlayStation were not detailed in the announcement. Sony Interactive Entertainment president, Jim Ryan, said that it would allow friends and communities to "hang out, have fun, and communicate more easily while playing games together." This suggests that Discord's voice chat service will be available on PlayStation, which would be a first for consoles.

Alternatively, this implementation may end up being similar to the one Discord has had on Xbox consoles since 2018, which simply allows users to share what games/apps they're using, without any of Discord's core features being present on Xbox.
