Cinematic survival shooter Abandoned coming to PS5 later this year

Blue Box Game Studios has announced that its first-person survival shooter, Abandoned,  will be landing on the PlayStation 5 later this year.

In a new post over on the PlayStation Blog, the Dutch developer explains the premise of the photo-realistic game and outlines what players can expect from the “cinematic, first-person horror survival shooter set in a highly detailed open world environment” that runs at 60fps in 4K.

“The story is centred around Jason Longfield, who wakes up in a strange forest,” writes Hasan Kahraman, game director at Blue Box Game Studios. “Abandoned and not remembering how he got there, Jason soon finds out that he was kidnapped and brought there for a dark purpose. Fighting for his survival, his main goal is escape.”

You can check out the first trailer for the game below.

The developer wants to deliver a uniquely personal gameplay experience to each player, and as such the studio has invested heavily in a variety of engaging systems.

"Every event has an influence on your character," the blog reads. "If Jason is out of breath after sprinting (or is afraid), his firing accuracy will suffer. Unlike action shooter titles, firing weapons in Abandoned will be realistically slow. You will need to be tactical in order to survive."

The developers want to make sure that the game feels realistic – this is a survival game, not an arcade-style FPS. "Abandoned requires you to hide and plan every shot before pulling the trigger. We want you to be nervous come each and every enemy encounter. To be aware that a wrong move can be the deciding factor between surviving a combat scenario or not." It certainly sounds tense.

The trailer above seems pretty light on actual gameplay, but we're promised "a full gameplay video will be available soon".

Abandoned will be available exclusively on PS5 Q4 2021. Other platforms have not been mentioned.
