Here's what Pokemon Go could look like on Microsoft's HoloLens

Developer Niantic shows off proof-of-concept using the AR headset.

Niantic has shown off what its Pokemon Go mobile game could look like on Microsoft's HoloLens AR headset.

As reported by The Verge, the demo was shown as part of a presentation about Microsoft's newly-announced mixed reality Mesh platform – as part of the company's Ignite conference – and sees Niantic boss John Hanke strolling through a world filled with augmented reality Pokemon characters. It also shows some of the ways that users can interact with Pokemon Go as well as the titular critters.

The video footage is watermarked as "proof-of-concept" and "not for consumer use," with Hanke saying in a blog post on the studio's website that the demo is just an "early glimpse" into what AR hardware and software could look like in the future.

"We’ve only scratched the surface," the Niantic boss wrote.

"We know the years ahead to be filled with important achievements which will serve as waypoints in AR’s journey to become a life-changing computing platform. We’re thrilled to be leading the way."

Microsoft announced its HoloLens back in 2014, showing off how the tech could work with an impressive Minecraft demo at E3 the next year.

Microsoft boss Satya Nadella said that its AR goggles had "mind-blowing" potential for video games, but later said that the first version of HoloLens was primarily aimed at businesses, not consumers.

In 2016, the developer of Young Conker revealed that a dev kit for HoloLens cost a whopping $3,000.

Microsoft subsequently announced another iteration of HoloLens in 2019, imaginatively named HoloLens 2.
