The Last of Us Part 2 has more game of the year awards than The Witcher 3, the previous record holder

The PS4 exclusive was given 261 game of the year awards.

Naughty Dog's The Last of Us Part 2 now has more game of the year awards than any other release ever.

That's according to tracking site Game Awards, which reports that the post-apocalyptic title boasts a whopping 261 top nods from 2020. The Last of Us Part 2 came in ahead of Supergiant's Hades – which claimed 53 game of the year awards – and fellow Sony title Ghost of Tsushima, which apparently received 49 awards. Other top charters included Animal Crossing: New Horizons, Cyberpunk 2077, Final Fantasy 7 Remake, and Doom Eternal.

That 261 figure puts Naughty Dog's ahead of the previous record-holder, CD Projekt's The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt from 2015. That title had 260 game of the year awards.

The Last of Us Part 2 launched for PlayStation 4 in June 2020 to critical acclaim. In our review, we described the title as "a generation-defining masterpiece," a sentiment shared widely by the media.

In its first three days after release, the game sold four million copies. The Last of Us Part 2 was the best-selling title for June in both the UK and the US.

More than 2,000 people and 14 studios worked on The Last of Us Part 2. Though the game is currently a PlayStation 4 exclusive, retail listings suggest that a PS5 version of Naughty Dog's post-apocalyptic romp could be on the way.
