Cyberpunk 2077 dethrones World of Warcraft: Shadowlands as fastest-selling PC game ever

Well, that didn't last long. After World of Warcraft's new expansion Shadowlands became the fastest selling PC game of all time, Cyberpunk 2077 has already gone and smashed that record.

CD Projekt Red had previously tweeted that Cyberpunk 2077 received eight million pre-orders, but a more detailed analysis over at GamesIndustry.biz breaks down the numbers for PC.

59% of pre-orders came from PC, which accounts for how 74% of pre-orders were digital.

That puts sales of Cyberpunk at 4.72 million on PC, which easily overtakes the previous record of 3.7 million global day one sales for Shadowlands.

Of course, that number is also purely from pre-orders and hasn't included purchases made at launch, so the final number is likely to be even higher.

The higher proportion of players opting for PC isn't surprising, given how CD Projekt Red's ambitious sci-fi RPG utilises the most advanced tech on PC, including ray-tracing and Nvidia DLSS. CDPR has also historically had a big audience on PC.

While early adopters of PS5 and Xbox Series X/S can run the game at a better performance than last-gen hardware, which reportedly suffer from severe framerate and resolution issues, the actual next-gen version isn't due on these platforms until sometime in 2021.

On the other hand, those without funds for a new console or beefy PC rig but a decent internet connection may want to consider playing Cyberpunk 2077 on Stadia, where it appears to be getting a warm reception.

At launch, Cyberpunk 2077 was the top Steam game, overtaking Dota 2 and CS:GO with over million concurrent players. "With so much to see and do, Cyberpunk 2077 is the kind of RPG where you blink and hours go by, which is just what we need to finish off 2020," we said in our 5/5 review.
