Microsoft walks back promise of monthly Xbox events in 2020

Microsoft is already retiring the Xbox 20/20 branding.

Earlier this year, Microsoft unveiled Xbox 20/20, essentially a new banner for its monthly updates on platform, games and services. Beginning with the May episode of Inside Xbox, the company pledged to deliver news every month in live shows for the remainder of the year.

On Friday, Microsoft quietly updated the Xbox Wire blog post where Xbox 20/20 was first announced to reveal that it's no longer going to be using that phrasing. As the post points out, the branding set the expectation of at least one show every month, something Microsoft can't commit to.

"After reassessing our programming for the rest of the year, we’ve decided to stop using the 'Xbox 20/20' phrasing as it implied that we would be releasing information in one way only, through a dedicated monthly show," the updated post reads.

"We’ve got so much more to share with news about Xbox Series X, new games like Halo: Infinite, and cloud gaming via Xbox Game Pass. We’re going to share that news in a variety of ways. It may sometimes be a dedicated show, YouTube videos, partnering with others, or sharing the latest via Xbox Wire. We want to stay flexible with how we connect with you."

This may not necessarily change anything, as Microsoft doesn't typically announce events months ahead. It does, however, confirm that we're not getting monthly shows, which, in hindsight, may not have been all that feasible of a goal to begin with.

Head of Xbox, Phil Spencer, recently revealed that the company has news it plans to share sometime this month, though it remains to be seen what form those announcements will take, or how big of an impact Microsoft expects them to have.

Officially announcing the rumoured Xbox Series S has to be on the list, though.
