Metal: Hellsinger is a new rhythm shooter, where you kill enemies on time to the beat of thunderous heavy metal.

Metal: Hellsinger starts out with the drums, but the more you kill to the beat, the more the music builds up until eventually, the vocals kick in. At that point, you’re killing with a 16x multiplier, slicing, blasting, and rocking out to a carefully crafted original soundtrack.

Developed by The Outsiders, a team lead by David Goldfarb (game director on Payday 2, lead designer on Battlefield 3 and Battlefield: Bad Company 2), this single-player game is due for release on PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Series X and PC in 2021.

Perhaps most importantly is the vocal talent The Outsiders has roped in for the soundtrack, which includes Matt Heafy of Trivium, Mikael St Anne of Dark Tranquillity, Björn Strid from Soilwork and Arch Enemy’s Alissa White-Gluz. The soundtrack is all original, but the vocals will be familiar to metalheads, with more to be announced.

If you’re thinking “that looks a bit like Doom” it’s because it does. Metal: Hellsinger takes place in Hell (duh!), although The Outsiders are keen to break away from the traditional depiction of flames and spikes to include frozen wastelands, cityscapes and more.

And yeah, it sounds like Doom to an extent. But when you consider what a clusterfuck the soundtrack for Doom Eternal turned out to be, maybe Hellsinger will benefit from fans looking for that sweet combo of metal and hell.

The Outsiders recently shelved Darkborn, but it has bounced back with the support of publisher Funcom.
