People are playing Modern Warfare more than any other Call of Duty this generation

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare has set new engagement records for the franchise.

Activision has revealed a couple of interesting stats for Call of Duty: Modern Warfare in a press release earlier today. The Infinity Ward-developed shooter has now surpassed $1 billion in worldwide sell-through (to consumers).

Unsurprisingly, it’s also this year’s biggest seller in the US so far, though that’s unlikely to change before the end of the year. Revenue figures are all well and good, but what’s even more relevant these days is player engagement.

There, Modern Warfare multiplayer appears to be outpacing series metrics. In the number of hours per player, as well as the overall hours played in the first 50 days on sale, Modern Warfare has set new Call of Duty records previously not seen this generation.

Modern Warfare multiplayer also averages more daily players than any other Call of Duty this generation, according to Activision.

For all its design faults, Modern Warfare is the most consumer-friendly Call of Duty in years. The game supports cross-play and cross-progression for the first time.

Save for the PS4-exclusive Survival, all multiplayer content is being made available simultaneously across all platforms. The game’s post-launch monetisation through the battle pass has also been well-received by players due to offering a direct path to acquiring content, and doing away with RNG and loot boxes.

Later today, Modern Warfare is set to receive a big content drop in the form of new map remakes, a new mode, and new Spec Ops experiences, not to mention new cosmetics.
