CD Projekt Red clarifies Cyberpunk 2077 religion quote

Believe it or not, CD Projekt Red did not actually say it'll offend people's religious beliefs in Cyberpunk 2077.

Earlier this week, an interview with Cyberpunk 2077 developer was reported on by some outlets. The original interview was with Polish site Gry Online WP, which means people immediately shared some less-than-stellar translation.

Cyberpunk 2077 quest director Meteusz Tomaskiewicz was quoted as saying that the game will not avoid avoid the subject of religion, even if it offends some players. Unfortunately, this wasn't what Tomaskiewicz actually said.

Following this mini-controversy, CD Projekt Red sent IGN official translation of the interview, which the site has since independently verified with their own translator.

"You mentioned religion. Does it still exist in the Cyberpunk world?" asks Gry Online. "Yes, and in many forms. As I mentioned, our vision is somehow based on the real world. And religion is a very important part of the latter, society-wise. In our game we’re going to see for example Christianity and its different branches, or religions from the East," said Tomaskiewicz.

Gry Online pressed, saying that Tomaskiewicz's claim "sounds controversial". "Someone will enter a church to cause havoc," it posited.

"We do not want to avoid religion as a topic, authenticity of the world is what counts for us. Technically, the situation you mentioned is possible, but this is all about the choices made by the player. We won’t encourage the player to do so. In our quests, which involve religious themes, we make sure there’s no disrespect," answered Tomaskiewicz.

As you can see, quite a bit different from the original translated quote, even stating the opposite in some ways.

Cyberpunk 2077 is out April 16 for PC, PS4, and Xbox One.
