What’s coming next in Hearthstone.

A new Hearthstone expansion was announced yesterday evening. The release of Saviors of Uldum will mark the arrival of the usual 130 or so new cards, a new keyword mechanic called Reborn, and new card types known as Plagues.

Thematically this marks a return to 2015’s League of Explorers set, with Reno and friends doing their bit to resist the ongoing assault from the gang who ran off with Dalaran in April’s Rise of Shadows expansion.

In our Saviors of Uldum guide, we’ve got the lowdown on everything that’s coming to Hearthstone when the expansion lands at the start of August.

Plague Cards

The Rise of Shadows introduced Scheme cards which grow in power with each turn that passes. Saviors of Uldum will add Plague cards to the mix.

These powerful spells will be available exclusively to the Priest, Rogue, Shaman, Warlock and Warrior classes, and all of them have a big impact against all minions on both sides of the board.

One example provided so far is Plague of Death. This 9 Mana Priest card silences, then destroys all minions on the board when played.

Note that the silencing effect will take care of any Deathrattles or buffs in effect before the minion is evaporated from the board.

Reborn Keyword

Reborn is the new keyword for Saviors of Uldum. Minions who possess this mechanic spawn a version of themselves when killed, but that replacement only has one point of health.

Quest Cards

Quests are also making a comeback with Saviors of Uldum. First introduced with the Journey to Un’Goro set, these special cards challenge you to meet certain criteria in exchange for a juicy new hero power.

The Druid, for example, receives Untapped Potential. Finish four turns with Mana left in the bank and your hero power will be replaced with Ossirian Tear. This passive effect triggers both of the Choose One effects on subsequently played cards.

The Warlock gets Supreme Archaeologist. After drawing 20 cards, you receive Tome of Origination. Use this to draw a card from your deck and that card will cost zero Mana.

When Saviors of Uldum launches, the following card sets will form the drafting pool for Hearthstone’s Arena mode:

  • Basic
  • Classic
  • League of Explorers
  • Journey to Un’Goro
  • Kobolds & Catacombs
  • Rastakhan’s Rumble
  • Saviors of Uldum
