Cyberpunk 2077 is inspired by Vampire the Masquerade and Deus Ex, current build very different from E3 2018 demo

Cyberpunk 2077 developer CD Projket RED has a clearer picture of what the game is now that it’s all coming together.

In a new interview with with AreaJugones [Spanish], quest director Mateusz Tomaszkiewicz spoke a little bit about how Cyberpunk 2077 has progressed since the E3 2018 demo.

“There are obviously many things that we have not [revealed] about the game yet, there are things that we are still working on, then I would say that the game is quite different from the gameplay [shown last year], but as I said, there are still details in which We are currently working [on],” said Tomaszkiewicz, according to Google’s translation.

Tomaszkiewicz reiterated that the demo we saw showed only a small fragment of the game. As the studio has since spent a lot of time implementing new content and polishing what’s there, the vision of an open-world RPG with choice and consequence started to click.

“We are polishing everything and constantly thinking how to make this game more interesting, how to make the gameplay cool and, well, the gameplay we saw last year was basically a small fragment of the game. There was not a clear picture of how the game fits into an open world or how it fits into a larger image of the game.”

Unsurprisingly, two of the most critically acclaimed first-person RPGs ever inspired Cyberpunk 2077. As CD Projekt RED wanted to maintain the first-person perspective for maximum immersion, the team looked to two of the greats.

“For my part, personally, Vampire Bloodlines. In terms of what is a RPG in the first-person and the way in which its non-linearity is built in the gameplay and dialogue, so this one of course. Specifically because it is the perfect example of a first person game and RPG that I personally enjoyed,” explained Tomaszkiewicz.

“And I would also say the Deus Ex franchise, especially the original Deus Ex. This one had a great impact on me as a developer and player back when I played it for the first time many years ago. And what I really liked about that game was [you could complete] missions in many ways. It was not only based on dialogue decisions, since you also had the things that were on the map and [the] different points of entry that allowed you to get into buildings, as well as elements that opened different paths.

“In short, both Vampire Bloodlines and Deus Ex, they are my two greatest inspirations.”

It’s good to hear that Cyberpunk 2077 is making good progress, because it at least means we’re going to see something new at E3 in June, which the studio called its most important ever.
