Ubisoft explains Far Cry New Dawn’s “light RPG” mechanics

Far Cry New Dawn is introducing some RPG-inspired mechanics, for the first time in the series.

This may not be immediately clear from watching Far Cry New Dawn‘s trailers, so Ubisoft decided to explain what that means for its open-world shooter.

In a new developer Q&A, creative director Jean-Sebastien Decant pointed out how these “light RPG” mechanics manifest in the game. “You’ll be able to craft guns that have ranks, and these guns will be useful to fight against enemies that also have ranks,” said Decant.

More broadly, the player’s home base in New Dawn can be upgraded the more you’re willing to invest in it, which in turn unlocks better upgrades and so on.

Decant also touched on the game’s escalation system, which brings a major change to outpost liberation. In New Dawn, you get to choose whether to simply occupy an outpost, or “squeeze” it. The former allows locals to move in and ensures the outpost regularly provides a stream of resources.

Squeezing it, however, offers a larger sum upfront, but leaves it open for enemy factions to retake it. When they do, the outpost will be more heavily defended, but will also now contain even more resources.

The developer hopes this will shake up this particular side of Far Cry, as there’s now an incentive to regain outposts, or play the long game and invest in them instead.

Far Cry New Dawn is out February 15 on PC, PS4, and Xbox One.
