HEVN is an open-world System Shock 2 that launched today

HEVN is a brand-new indie action-adventure game that's heavily inspired by gaming classics of generations past.

System Shock 2 has inspired many designers since it launched in 1999, but few games have been able to match what it accomplished. Now one enterprising indie studio named Miga will have a crack at the formula with an open-world variant called HEVN. And what's more, you can play it right now.

HEVN is set a hundred years in the future, as corporations send spacecraft across the solar system to claim its resources. You play as Sebastian Mar, an astronaut who arrives on a mining planet to find its base is abandoned and crumbling. Completely alone - save for a single distant colleague over the radio - Mar must uncover the truth, survive hostile life forms, and find a way off-world.

HEVN's visual style is absolutely reminiscent of games like System Shock 2 or the original Deus Ex, but its gameplay mechanics are fairly modern. Not only is there a large open-world to explore, but HEVN's survival mechanics require you to eat, sleep, and even take medications to stay alive. Dialogue systems let you chat with NPC humans and droids, while puzzles can be solved or bypassed in multiple ways.

The System Shock 2 comparison is a big claim, but it certainly looks like a promising new take on retro gaming classics. If you'd like to try for yourself, HEVN is out now for Steam with a 25% discount for launch week.
