The next Pokemon Go Community Day event takes place this weekend, September 22, and it’s all about gen 2 starter Chikorita.
It sure doesn’t feel like it’s been a month since Pokemon Go’s Eevee Day, but it has been – and now we’re in September it’s time for the next Pokemon Go community day event. This time, it’s all built around grass-type generation 2 starter Pokemon Chikorita. This is the ninth community day of 2018, of course – there’s one a month.
Originally discovered in the Johto region, Chikorita will appear far more often in the wild for three hours on the community day, which is Saturday September 22. There’s other rewards as part of this community day too. There’s a range of rewards around evolution, special moves and of course a chance to catch a shiny Chikorita. We’ll explain all below…
Pokemon Go Chikorita Community Day September Date, Start Time & End Time
As always, September’s community day is a worldwide affair that will last three hours. While August’s Eevee event was extended to two days to allow players to catch more Pokemon in order to see each of the Eevee Evolutions in Pokemon Go, Chikorita has a simple three Pokemon evolution path like every generation’s starter Pokemon, so the Chikorita event is back down to three hours on one day only.
That day is September 22. That’s a Saturday, meaning most people will be free to head to the park or another location packed with PokeStops. The Pokemon Go Chikorita Community Event will take place at different times depending on what part of the world you’re in:
- Chikorita Community Day Times in Asia Pacific: 12pm to 3pm JST
- Chikorita Community Day Times in Europe and Africa: 10am to 1pm BST, 11am to 2pm CET
- Chikorita Community Day Times in North America: 11am to 2pm PST, 2pm to 5pm EST
As always with these community day events, Chikorita day carries with it a bunch of different important buffs. Most important is that the wild Pokemon enecounter rate for Chikorita and Shiny Chikorita is way up during this three hour period – but there are actually other buffs that are their own reward for participating in this community day.
Let’s talk about those buffs and rewards in more detail…
Pokemon Go September Community Day Rewards: Shiny Chikorita, Triple EXP, Exclusive Frenzy Plant Move and more
As mentioned above, the main reason to take part in this community day is to catch a bunch of Chikorita and then find one with half-decent stats and evolve it up to Bayleef and then Meganium, the more powerful evolutions of this Pokemon.
Meganium isn’t exactly a Pokemon used frequently in the high end of Pokemon Go’s metagame – it’s nowhere to be found on our charts of the best Pokemon in Pokemon Go – but it’s still a decently powerful grass-type Pokemon that can be used to exploit the weaknesses of Pokemon who have a type weakness to grass. Taking part in the event has other bonuses too, however, making it quite worthwhile:
- Chikorita spawn rate is way up, including for Shiny Chikorita
- Lures will last for three hours at a time, meaning one dropped on a Pokestop at the start of the event will last the whole event
- EXP gained for catching Pokemon is tripled. Use a Lucky Egg to boost your EXP gains even further during the event – six will cover the duration of the event
- Guaranteed access to an exclusive move, Frenzy Plant. Frenzy Plant is a powerful grass-type move that in the main Pokemon games is quite the heavy hitter – though it remains to be seen if Go will match that power level. To get it, you simply just need to evolve Bayleef into Meganium during the event hours
Sadly there doesn’t appear to be a Stardust Bonus this time around, but this is still a great opportunity to gain a lot of experience and catch a lot of Chikorita in order to have a solid chance to have one with a good IV to then evolve into Bayleef and Meganium, the two fairly strong evolutions of the starter.
Shiny Chikorita: what color to look out for on the day
If you want to know how Shiny Chikorita looks, it’s sort of appropriate for September as the leaves start to brown – it’s an autumnal look compared to the bright, lively spring green of Chikorita usually. Here’s a look at the shiny forms of Chikorita, Bayleef and Meganium – just so you know what you’re looking for on the community event day:
October & November Pokemon Go Community Day Dates confirmed
Aside from the Chikorita event information, dates for the Community Day events in October and November were also announced this week.
The events will take place on Sunday, October 21, and Saturday, November 10. The featured Pokemon and special bonuses will be announced at later date, though we fully expect October’s to be Cyndaquil.
Ninatic Labs held the first Community Day event in January with Pikachu. February’s Pokemon was Dratini, March was Bulbasaur, in April it was Mareep, May’s Pokemon was Charmander, in June the Pokemon was Larvitar, July was Squirtle, and this month it was Eevee.
And don’t forget: until August 19 at 9pm PDT and August 20 at 12am EDT, 5am BST, all trades—including Special Trades—will cost 25% less Stardust to complete. This applies to all friends, even brand-new ones.
