This is our first look at gameplay footage of Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice

We’ve all been anxious to watch actual gameplay of Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice since the game’s official reveal at E3 in June, and we got our wish at gamescom this week.

Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice is playable at gamescom this week, of course, and there’s ten minutes of b-roll doing the rounds, which you can watch below in full.

Right off the bat, the level design looks very different from typical From Software levels. The main character’s grappling hook allows him to reach various different vantage points, making for gameplay that is very vertical.

In fact, this tool is used so much to get around the world and flank enemies that it’s practically part of the core loop. The combat appears fast and fluid, and about as challenging as traditional Souls games.

The main combat mechanic demonstrates how parries, blocks and successful attacks can stagger an enemy. This is most apparent on bosses, which take longer to stagger. When that happens, you’re able to go in for a high-damage attack. The protagonist himself also has a stagger meter, which has the same effect.

I didn’t spot any stamina meters, so I am not sure how Sekiro will prevent against spamming attacks.

As you’re about to see, stealth plays a big role in combat. You’re able to perform ledge grabs and hide on one side of a doorway to catch unsuspecting enemies coming through. This is a little weird to see in a From Software game, but it looks good.
